The 6 Fab Trucks and their 6 teams from National Tao-yuan Agricultural & Industrial Vocational High School, New Taipei Municipal New Taipei Senior High School, National Taichung Industrial High School, National Tainan Second Senior High School, National Hualien Industrial High School and National FongShan Senior Commercial & Industrial Vocational School, will not only take part in the “Cross-country Truck Race” with their own “Cross-country Trucks,” each team will also build a “Sumo Truck” on-the-spot at the TAF Innovation Basefor the “Sumo Truck Race.”

National Tainan Second Senior High School, representing the Southern Region
This team has a rich historical background, and they are the only high school team among all participants. This means they are not professional in this area like other teams, they are just six members from their school club, the Computer Information Science Society. These 6 students, Wang Chuanjie(王傳傑), Hu Yasen(胡雅森), Chen Zhiyang(陳誌陽), Chen Yuhan(陳宇漢), Lin Yunwei(林昀蔚) and Lin Qifeng(林其鋒), with the help of club instructor Mr. Tu Yilang(途益郎), who teaches back-end software language C++, and Mr. Chen Jianyuan(陳建源) from Maker Space, who specializes in hardware like Arduino, wants to apply the C++ language they learn in the club to designing their own Arduino.
Cross-country Truck and Sumo Truck
The team made their Cross-country Truck out of 3D printing, Arduino and a motor. We can only wait until the race to find out how it works. As for their Sumo Truck, it’s designed around the idea of a “lawn mower.” Besides 3D printing and Arduino, it will also be equipped with a rotary weapon, aiming to mow the opponents’ trucks as though they were the lawn. Looks like they come prepared this time.
National FongShan Senior Commercial & Industrial Vocational School, representing Kaohsiung and Pingtung
The experience of 3D modeling and 3D printing is crucial to win this race, and the National FongShan Senior Commercial & Industrial Vocational School team is likely to win because its members are all from the Department of Computer Mechanical Drawing, the Department of Mechanical Engineering or the Department of Data Processing. Leading the students Guo Lizai(郭理在), Lin Chunhui(林純慧), Wu Jieying(吳杰穎), Xu Zhenghan(許政翰), Chen Bowei(陳柏維) and Chen Bohao(陳柏豪) are two teachers from the Department of Computer Mechanical Drawing, Mr. Huang Ziyu(黃子育) and Mr. Zeng Baoqing(曾寶慶).
The team believes that motor, shovel and tire grip are the most important elements in a Sumo Truck. For the motor, they prepared one with a high torque, and another one with a gearbox that tones down the motor’s RPM; for the shovel, they built it around the idea of a stacker, and tweaked the angle of its sector to minimize damage from the opponent; and lastly, their tires are printed with soft material, and enhanced in grip with rubber band. The tire tread of the cross-country truck is borrowed from that of a dump truck, and as for the body of their truck, they did not have any idea on its design at first, it was only until the final phase did they come up with an arc-shaped body that’s similar to a roly-poly toy. This design will automatically revert the truck to its position if it rolls over.
National Hualien Industrial High School, representing the Eastern Region
The National Hualien Industrial High School team is a collaboration between the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Technical Drawing. The six members, Qiu Jingfu(邱靖富), Li Yuanda(李沅達), Lian Junjie(連竣傑), Xiao Limin(蕭立旻), You Kaiwen(游凱雯) and Lin Zhiyu(林之瑜), all share great interest in creative science, and have been trained to program Arduino and PLC. Unlike other schools, the Hualien Industrial High has already experienced 3D printer, laser cutter and CNC machine way before the Fab Truck went to their school, and with the help from two teachers Mr. Gao Zhongfu(高忠福) and Mr. Lin Zhihong(林志宏), they are determined to win!
Cross-country Truck and Sumo Truck
Their Cross-country truck is modified from a radio controlled car, equipped with the necessary parts for racing and the elements of Hualien Industrial High’s Fab Truck, making their cross-country truck one-of-a-kind. Their Sumo Truck however, is designed around the idea of a dual-motor differential, and added with a front panel to attack the opponent.
