[Smart Family] Bourgeois Life; Smart Life

by: Pei-Syuan Lai

A “Smart Home” allows residents to have a high-quality living space that is safe, comfortable and energy-saving. However, it costs about 120,000 to 250,000 NTD to afford full wireless smart devices, which can be a real burden for an office worker with a bourgeois living standard.

Is having a smart home only exclusive to high-income households? In fact, there are many smart devices (e.g. home appliances/equipment) with which workers at bourgeoisie class can build a smart home without having to spend a fortune. The following are two smart devices that are popular today- Robot Vacuums & Smart Speaker.

Robot Vacuums- A Must-have Home Gadget

Working for all day long is exhausting enough, not to mention spending time sweeping the floor after going home. Because of this, Robot vacuums have become the first robot used as home appliances, and it is gaining its popularity in almost any household.

A robot vacuum adopts either path-planning algorithm or random path algorithm based on its operation. The former type comes with camera and is able to navigate, plan paths, and correct deviated paths by identifying its own location and direction according to the surrounding. The latter is more affordable, while functions provided are not as many. It moves straight forward and only turns when it encounters blocks in front.

The advantage of using a robot vacuum is that it can do all the cleaning for you. However, whatever model the robot is, a robot vacuum only cleans up wool, hair, and dust often found at the corner of walls or between furniture. There is still a need to use a regular vacuum to clean the house thoroughly.

Smart Speaker- A Virtual Assistant

Most people who rent a place long for others’ companion, so that life will not be dull and dry. A smart speaker will be the perfect choice! A smart speaker is a voice command device with an integrated AI assistant. Some smart speakers can use wireless network that takes voice command to control home automation devices.

For some families that don’t have a complete smart home system, they can still find much fun in talking to the smart speaker to chat, listen to music, check the weather, listen to news, check traffic, track packages, translate, etc. It can even connect to a third-party application for more services.

Although some families are not yet able to afford a full scale of smart devices at home, a few devices such as robot vacuums or smart speakers can still bring into daily life the conveniences of technology. It is hoped that there are more innovative inventions in the future to meet people’s need in life.
